Chapter 41
Chapter 41
Mason smirked mockingly. "You have quite the appetite. Aren't you worried that you're being too greedy?"
Zoe gave a cold laugh. "It's up to me to decide whether I'm being greedy or not. 300 thousand and not a penny less. Then, I'll get this job done, Mr. Mason."
Mason narrowed his eyes. "What if we don't secure the project?"
Zoe's smile faded. "That's not my problem. It just means you're not capable enough."
No one had ever challenged him so blatantly before. Mason found it arousing.
He leaned in, whispering near Zoe's ear, "It seems I have to secure this project now. Otherwise, my dear Mrs. Lockwood might think I'm incapable."
His masculine scent enveloped Zoe's senses as he approached her, causing a flutter. Zoe pushed him away.
"Are we discussing business or are you trying to have your way with me again?"
She still felt disgusted by the incident from the other night. A disloyal husband always brought unpleasant images of his intimate encounters with other women to mind. Just the thought of it was repulsive.
When they got out of the car, Mason caught her wrist.
Zoe suppressed her anger and said, "I'll contact Rosemary tomorrow morning, but the 300 thousand must be transferred first."
Mason stared at her for a moment before saying, "I can write you a check right now."
Zoe looked at him, and Mason chuckled. "What, you don't trust me?"
Turning her face away, Zoe glanced at the dark night ahead and said, "After dealing with someone like you for so long, even a fool would learn your tricks."
Even though they were on the brink of divorce, Zoe always had regrets. She regretted trusting the wrong person.
Mason wrote her a check and pressed it in her hand.
Suddenly, he said, "About Lilith…"
This was the first time he mentioned Lilith to Zoe. All rights © NôvelDrama.Org.
Zoe did not know if he was planning on giving her an explanation or not. She was just stunned to hear the name.
Then, she calmly said, "I know she came to Brookesville and is in the same hospital as my father. I know you need to treat her leg, and I also know it's her wish to meet Aurora, and you need to introduce Aurora to her."
Mason stared at her as if trying to pry into her thoughts.
Zoe continued, "Everyone on the Internet knows about this. It wasn't like I had to dig to find the information."
Upon saying that, she opened the car door.
The cold breeze blew outside, and she coughed but did not look back.
She walked away without hesitation, leaving Mason behind.
When she reached home, she gripped the check in her palm until it hurt.
Her heart surged with mixed emotions when she saw the 300 thousand dollars. It was the first time she had scraped something off Mason. Unfortunately, she had to do it under the guise of Mrs. Lockwood.
…
The next morning, Mason's driver came to pick up Zoe. To play her role well, Zoe put on the clothes she used to wear, elegant and luxurious.
Rosemary was extremely fond of her.
Rosemary held Zoe's hand affectionately and said many kind words. She also complained softly, "My husband is not very competent. I told him several times that I wanted you to come, but that secretary of Mason's is so uncooperative."
In high society, they detested mistresses.
Rosemary said, "Thanks to you, I've let out some pent-up frustration. That secretary, with her humble background, is only fit to be an assistant. But you, Zoe, outshine her so much when it comes to being a wealthy lady."
Zoe smiled lightly. "Thank you for the compliment, Mrs. Rosemary."
Rosemary patted her hand, smiling. "Let's take a look at the venue first and discuss how to proceed."
Zoe nodded and agreed.
As they walked into the hall, someone descended from the second floor, adjusting his cufflinks as he came.
When Zoe saw him, she was momentarily stunned.
It was Gregory.
