Chapter 94
“What did you say?” Yoel’s jaw dropped.
Luther and Sage were enjoying dinner at a French restaurant.
Luther cut up the piece of steak on his plate as he watched Sage eat her bowl of salad. Luther was feeling somewhat guilty.” People would think that I am bullying you.”
Taking a bite of her salad, she replied, “You’d be torturing me if you forced me to have meat. I’ve eaten too much during lunchtime.”
Taking a sip of red wine, Luther asked, “You had lunch with Yoel?”
“Yeah.’ Sage nodded.
Luther continued to cut the steak. “How are things going with the horse racing business?”
“Looking good” Sage took a sip of water and went on, “But the final decision is up to Yoel’s father. Yoel did suggest that we should probably find another partner.”
Luther frowned “What does he mean? Does he not trust you enough? Or is he not confident that Fulton Group would be able to see the project through?”
Shaking her head, Sage replied, “It’s not that. It’s that managing the project would be easier if we were to get someone from Nadeem City. Then there would be cooperation between all three cities.”
“Well, why did you let Jace leave?” Swirling the wine glass in his hand, Luther added, “If nothing else, Yuriel Group is our best choice when it comes to capability.”
Pursing her lips together, Sage replied reluctantly, “But I don’t want to have anything to do with him anymore.”
“Work is work. You don’t need me to tell you that you shouldn’t bring your personal feelings to work, right?”
Luther added, “I thought you wanted to recuperate the cost of the emerald necklace? This is your chance isn’t it?”
“I know.”
Sage knew better, but there was just one thing that was bothering her. “I don’t know what’s gotten into Jace. He’s demanding to know why I chose to marry him.”
Luther burst into laughter. “Some men are just plain jerks. So, did you tell him why?”
Sage shook her head. “We’re already divorced. What more is there to say. The more he wants to know, the more that I don’t want to tell him. What’s the point?”
“You’re right. After all, you’re the one who had a crush on him for ten years, not him. Tsk, tsk.”
Annoyed, Sage gritted her teeth and growled, “Luther Bennett.”
“Why? Did I say something?”
Luther continued to tease Sage. “Don’t you remember how you kept going on about wanting to repay his kindness, and how you wanted to marry him?”
“Luther Bennett!” Sage glared at him as her irritation flared.
Unfazed, Luther continued laughing before finally comforting Sage. “Alright, alright, I’m just joking. Don’t be mad.”
“But for real. You’ve already repaid his kindness. He saved you that year, and you’ve saved him as well. Plus, you took care of him for three years. You’ve done more than enough, Sage. There’s no need for you to care about him anymore.”
Putting on a serious face, Luther added, “Even if there comes a day when he remembers you, you can tell him that you no longer owe him anything.”
A shadow passed over her eyes as she was reminded of how he had saved her, and how he had neglected and abandoned her. Bitterness welled up inside her. Copyright Nôv/el/Dra/ma.Org.
Her love for him had always been one-sided, wishful thinking. There was no one else aside from herself to blame. Right from the start, she had been fighting a losing battle.
