Chapter 49
Chapter 49
49 A Game of Reputations
Nathan’s anger simmered like a storm as he paced the opulent halls of the charity gala. The very
thought of apologizing to Emma in this grand setting, amidst the city’s elite, churned his stomach. His
mind whirled with indignation – how had Emma, whom he deemed barely more than a docile
housekeeper during her marriage to Alex, ascended to this level of prominence?
“I just don’t see it,” he muttered to himself, watching Emma from across the room, her poise and grace
catching everyone’s attention. “What’s so special about her?”
His father, sensing the brewing tempest in Nathan, whispered a stern warning, “Keep your temper in
check. We’re in the Smirnoff’s den.”
But Nathan was past caring. His pride, wounded and raw, propelled him forward. As he approached
Emma and Wayne, his steps heavy with resentment, the air bristled with tension.
Wayne, ever observant, noticed the hostility in Nathan’s stride. “Emma,” he said softly, “it’s your call.
How you want to handle him.’
Emma’s gaze didn’t waver. “He’s made his bed,” she said quietly.
Nathan’s dramatic bow was theatrical, his apology a performance. “I apologize for the harm I caused. It
was wrong of me.”
Wayne’s eyes narrowed, seeing through the charade. The apology was as much about saving face as
seeking forgiveness.
Emma, her voice steady, accepted the apology. “Thank you, Nathan. But the damage done goes
beyond words.”
Nathan’s smile faltered. This was not the meek surrender he’d expected.
Wayne interjected, his tone icy. “Is there anything else, Nathan?”
In a moment of reckless bravado, Nathan jibed, “Just be wary of a recently divorced woman, Mr.
Smirnoff.”
The crowd gasped. Such a direct insult in such a setting was unheard of.
Wayne’s response was swift and cutting. “A woman’s worth is not diminished by her marital status.
Unlike some, who falter at the mere thought of independence.”
Nathan’s smugness vanished, replaced by a dawning realization of his misstep.
Wayne, without another word, took Emma’s arm and exited the gala, his departure a silent but powerful
statement.
The room buzzed with whispered speculation. Nathan, now isolated, felt the weight of his actions. The
guests’ eyes bore into him, their disdain palpable. NôvelDrama.Org is the owner.
Alex and Nathan’s father arrived in time to catch the tail end of the debacle. The father’s face drained

of color, understanding the magnitude of the fallout.
Wayne, once outside, dialed a number. “Cancel all of Nathan’s deals. Every single one.”
Emma, standing beside him, knew this was more than retribution. It was a statement: the Smirnoffs
would not tolerate disrespect.
Inside, Nathan’s father slumped against a wall, his dreams for his son crumbling. Nathan stood frozen,
the reality of his situation sinking in.
The gala, meant to be a night of celebration and charity, had turned into a battlefield of reputations. And
in this game, the price of pride was steep. Nathan, once poised to conquer, now faced a future
uncertain and alone.
