A bombshell
Melissa
It was three days after I walked out from Dexter at the bar and I was overwhelmed with guilt. The urge to call him and apologize for being rude gnawed in my chest, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it.
Staring at my reflection in the mirror, I consoled myself with the fact that I’d see him again to sign the contract. Then I’d use a stone to kill two birds by apologizing once we were done.
Wearing an Armani dark blue skirt suit added to my confidence as I traipsed out of my condo and headed for his company. My heart beat with anticipation, knowing that Emilia would be present.
It was time for the head to become the tail.
I got to the building in no time and I stopped by his secretary’s office. Since it was a decision that affected the reputation and finances of the company, the board of directors had to be available for the meeting.
The boardroom was on the third floor so I headed for the elevator in the hallway. I pressed one of the floor buttons and it dinged open, but that wasn’t all. My number one enemy was already inside the elevator, probably wondering why she had to be whisked away from her pretty moment, to be at work.
“Hi,” I greeted sweetly and immediately, her face formed a frown.
She didn’t respond but I wasn’t satisfied with her silence. Riling her up before dropping the bombshell on her later on looked like a kind of fun I couldn’t ignore.
“I greeted you, miss. It’s only right that you respond.” I said harshly, acting offended.
An irritated hiss slipped out from her lips. “No, Melissa. I don’t respond to women who have their eyes on other women’s boyfriends.”
“What do you mean?” I asked innocently and she scoffed, moving away from my side to stand in front of me.
If glares could kill, I’d be lying six feet below because she was so ready to murder me. Something struck my mind right there. I was never her problem, she was just an evil person who didn’t hesitate to hide her personality from people who couldn’t stand up for themselves.
“I think my boyfriend likes you.” She spat and this time I couldn’t hold back a chuckle. At least she was honest about what she observed.
I arched my brows and whipped up a perplexed expression. “Who’s your boyfriend?”
She gave me an are-you-serious gaze then folded her arms, nearly pushing her cleavages out of the skimpy dress she wore.
Didn’t anyone tell her that she was coming for a board meeting and not a club party?
“Do you really not know who he is?” She asked exasperatedly. “His name is Dexter Hemmingway, and if you come any inch closer to him, then you’ll have me to contend with.” She snarled while pointing her index finger furiously at me.
I shoved her aside and stepped out of the elevator when it dinged. “I don’t snatch people’s husbands, darling. That’s your job. I think you should be more interested in resuscitating your dead career back to life before your reputation will be swept under the carpet.”
Blood drained from her face as I flashed her a triumphant smile and walked towards the board room.
I was punctual as usual, though they were a few others who were already seated. Previously, I would have felt out of place but with the awestruck glances they passed at me, I knew that I was right where I should be.
Some of the older men kept leering at me, their eyes blazing with undiluted lust which got me disgusted. They were old enough to be my father so they’d better kept their horny machines between their thighs.
Dexter sat in the middle, while I took a seat close to him. Emilia barged in with a sassy gait and plopped down lousily on an empty chair beside me.
I tried to make eye contact with him but he kept his gaze fixed on his laptop. I raked through my well permed hair in frustration. I couldn’t understand why his silence got to me, but it would have to end after today.
After I’d served Emilia a little taste of her own medicine.
“We can begin now since we’re already complete.” Dexter said and his secretary began with the formalities.
Minutes later, my mind had completely switched from sulking over Dexter’s intentional ignorance to focusing on the main reason I was her.
My body became giddy with excitement the moment he stood up to convince the other directors about why they had to contract me as their brand ambassador. I didn’t know he had so much knowledge about me until he started listing the huge milestones I’d achieved as a fashion model.
A snort resonated from my side but I overlooked it, after all, I wasn’t the one with the dead career.
“At this point, I think it will be a good investment if we put her on board.” He concluded and they all applauded him.
My face beamed with pride as I took a cursory glance at all the people seated with us. They respected Dexter, not only because he was the late CEO’s son, but he had worked really hard to bring the company to where it was presently.
It was time for me to sign the papers so the lawyer whose expression was already tense, called on the attention of Dexter.
“I’m sorry, but there’s a clause in the contract that I think we all have to be aware of.” He raised his hand, while I held back my smirk.
“What could that be?” He asked curtly.
The lawyer swallowed nervously, his throat bobbing up and down as he flipped through the pages. “The model wants Emilia Jones to work for her as an assistant.” He summarised.
Emilia let out a deafening scream that almost sent me running from my seat. Then she sprang up like an angry tiger, ready to tear me to pieces, but the good part was that she didn’t have any claws.
“Her assistant?” She thundered. “Are you joking?” She fumed at me while I kept shut, enjoying the conflict displaying on their faces.
Most of them knew that Emilia was Dexter’s baby mama and they wouldn’t like to hurt him, but at the same time, they needed my services.Content provided by NôvelDrama.Org.
This was going to be a tough one.
I decided to butt in. “I think my condition is as clear as day and that’s the only thing I want, so it’s either she becomes my assistant or I walk away.” I replied cockily, tapping my fingers on the glass table while waiting for them to make a decision.
