The Billionaire’s Pretend Fiancée

Paranoia

Sofie’s POV

I remained mute like a dummy as I blankly stared into space.

I had desperately yearned for good news like this, but I had no idea how I was supposed to act when it finally happened.

“Sofie, are you still there? Did you hang up on me?” Damien’s voice wafted through my line of hearing.

I forced myself out of the mini trance I was, to give him a response.

“I’m still here. I’m sorry. I’m just trying to process it. So they got the warrant earlier then.” I said.

“Yes. They did. Thankfully. By the way, Roman just got discharged right now. I just got the message from my assistant. So you should see him soon. I have to get back to work. We need to have Lana sentenced to jail as soon as possible.” Damien explained.

“Right. You should. Thanks for everything, Damien.”

“There’s no need to thank me, Sofie. Take care of yourself, and have a nice day.” He said, and hung up.

I mindlessly stared at my phone for a while as various unhinged thoughts assailed my mind, with the most prominent one being what Roman was currently up to.

Amy scooted closer to me, and placed a hand on my shoulder. “What happened, babe? You look pale. Did Lana do something again?”

I shook my head in negation. “No. She didn’t. She shouldn’t be able to do anything to us forever if the trial goes well. Damien just called to inform me that she has been arrested.”

“Finally, thank goodness!” Amy shrieked in excitement, expecting me to join her.

Her excitement fizzled out when I didn’t, and she fixated a scrutinizing gaze on me.

“Why do you look miserable after hearing this wonderful news? Or is there something else you aren’t telling me?”

“H-He-” I paused, as tears hitched my throat and fuzzied my vision.

“Take it easy, Sofie. Tell me slowly, what happened?” She asked, rubbing my back in soothing circles.

“Roman has regained his memory, Amy. H-he can remember me now, and he’s asking for me but he just got discharged. What should I do?” I spurted, and Amy’s eyes comically widened into saucers.

“What? Oh my goodness, today is such a great day for you, Sofie. I’m so happy for you, babe.” She screeched, as she pulled me into a bear hug.

I allowed myself to be hugged as I quietly wept on her shoulder.

I couldn’t believe it.

It felt like I was hallucinating.

Too many good things were happening to me today, and I was scared that they’d all turn out to be a dream.

“Or do you want me to pinch you again? You look really spaced out.” Amy teased, as she withdrew from the hug.

“No, thank you.” I huffed, and wiped the tears off my face.

“So are you going to leave for the mansion today? Or will you go tomorrow? Would you like me to go with you? You look anxious. Will you be okay by yourself? I m-”

I placed my hand over hers to stop her rambling. “I’m not meeting a stranger, remember? I’m meeting Roman, my boyfriend. I don’t know even when I’m going to see him at the mansion. Everything still feels like an illusion.”

Amy was about to say something when a knock came on the door.

We exchanged befuddled glances with each other before we both averted our gaze to the door at the same time.

I don’t know why but for an odd reason, I felt compelled to answer the door.

“I’ll answer it. Please check on the cinnamon rolls. Hopefully they haven’t turned into roasted cinnamon rolls by now.” I joked, and she laughed before nodding and scurrying away to the kitchen.

I got up, and inhaled deeply as I rubbed my clammy hands against the back pockets of my jeans, before I walked to the door and opened it.

A gasp escaped my lips when I saw Roman standing right in front of me, on the threshold of the apartment, with a soft smile playing on his lips.

“Cuore mio.” He whispered, as he longingly stared at me.

I willed my mouth to say something, to say anything in response.

But my mouth just noiselessly flapped open and close as I stared at him.

Hearing the nickname smoothly roll off his tongue made me weak in the knees, like a simp.

“I’m sorry for the pain and misery you had to go through because of me. I want us to start all over again, cara mia.” He muttered, and widened his arms to hug me.

But I just stood there frozen like a mutt as I stared at him.

Roman just chuckled before pulling me into a warm hug.

I let the tears fall, as I inhaled lungfuls of his musky masculine scent which smelled like home.

I didn’t hug him back and just remained still in his hold, as I cried my eyes out.

“I missed you, cara. Even if I couldn’t remember you, I just knew something was missing.” He muttered against my ear.

I tried to respond again but my mouth remained clamped shut, as the image of him almost dying in that abandoned building resurfaced in my mind.

As if a demon suddenly possessed me, I pushed him off me.

He looked confused, as he stared down at me. “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”

I kept my gaze averted to the floor as I began. “It’s nice to see you. I’m happy to learn that you are finally yourself again. The engagement contract between us was meant to have ended two weeks ago, but I haven’t been myself lately, so it escaped my memory.”

“What are you saying, amore? Did I do something wrong? Is it about the baby? Don’t worry about anything, you and the baby mean the most to me. I will never dream of letting either of you go.” Roman said, and made to hold my hand but I just folded my arms across my chest.

“I will try to sign the contract termination letter before the week ends, and have it delivered to your residence as soon as possible. Have a nice trip back home.” I said, and slammed the door in his shocked face.

I rested my back against the door, as I placed a hand over my chest, to make my breathing steady.Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.

“Who was that?” Amy asked, walking over toward me.

“No one.” I lied.

She clearly didn’t seem to believe me but she let it go, and headed back to the kitchen.

I darted the slammed door a wistful stare before trekking to the kitchen, with my heart violently hammering against my ribs.

I had no idea why I panicked, and did something as dense as that, like someone with a pea-sized brain.
